On Thanksgiving Day, real estate tycoon Alexander White accompanied his mother, Eleanor, back to their old neighborhood for a donation ceremony to rebuild the community school. On the way, they ran into Sophie Stone, who had been forced by her gambling-addicted father and snobbish mother to drop out of school and into marriage. Eleanor was overcome with pity, and Alexander funded Sophie’s way through community college.
